The company 'Naughty Dog's' is a game production company founded by two men by the names of Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984. They started as an independent company with high aspirations until the studio was bought out by 'Sony Computer Entertainment' in 2001 for an undisclosed price.
Game production companies like 'Naughty Dogs' are all split into separate departments as such as the graphics department or the sound department. In these departments, each person hired specialises in a single or multitude of skills that could range from character design or model texturing. The reason for the split between departments is to relieve the workload through multiple people but it does cause time delays when certain assets have to be transported back and fourth from each department. Additionally, 'Naughty Dog's' parent company 'Sony' works in a Vertical Integration business model which means that they essentially own and design every part of there company; this includes the development of games all the way to the final publishing of a game. Furthermore, 'Naughty Dog's' is a First Party Game Developer meaning that they are a sub-company of a larger company that creates technologies like video game consoles.
'Naughty Dog's' created a variety of games spread across multiple genres which aided in its massive growth in the 2000's era. Their highest rated games consist of:
'Naughty Dog's' is at the top position in the games production industry in comparison to other large game production companies like Blizzard and EA because of the sheer number of rewards and revenue they have made from there games. For example, they created Uncharted 4 which received five rewards ranging from the best narrative to just being an outright good game. These rewards consist with the amount of revenue 'Naughty Dog's' made from releasing this game; they bought in $56 million in digital sales along with selling over 8.7 million physical copies of the game back when it was first released.
This in comparison to a games company like 'Blizzard' who created games like Overwatch and Diablo were significantly outmatched by the games 'Naughty Dog's' have produced. For example, the game Diablo III also received five rewards ranging from the BAFTA's to sound excellence. However, the game only bought in $33 million in gross revenue to Blizzard which is much lower than the $56 million Uncharted 4 bought in.

Large game companies like 'Naughty Dog's' all have big competitors to match there studio size and the ratings of their games. One of these big competitors to Naughty Dog's is a games company called 'Blizzard' who have released long-standing games like Overwatch, Diablo, World of Warcraft and many others. Blizzard was founded in recent years back in 1991 originally by Frank Pearce, Allen Adham and Micheal Morhaime.
Another big competitor to 'Naughty Dog's' company is 'Activision' who have released a large range of games that are still active and popular in the modern day. They produced games like the Call of Duty franchise and Destiny. Activision was founded in October of 1979 by Larry Kaplan.
A third big competitor to the 'Naughty Dog's' company is 'EA' who dominate the sports genre and are also large in the action genre in the games industry. WHAT IS JUUL'S THEORY?
Juul's theory was theorised by Jesper Juul in Denmark in the late 2000's.
The main premise of the theory he was trying to make is "What makes a game a game."
He says that:
"A rule based system with a variable and quantifiable outcome, where different outcomes are required different values, the player exerts efforts in order to influence the outcome, the player feels emotionally attached to the outcome, and the consequences of the activity are negotiable.”
"Ninja Theory" operates on a Vertical Integration system which means that they own all of the development and publishing processes in there company and they don't have to outsource it to third-party companies. Additionally, the company have multiple departments like a regular game development company to make the work is split through the employees based on their strengths and weaknesses which will overall make a better product in the end. These departments consist of a sound department, graphics department, animation department. Furthermore, the company 'Ninja Theory' is another example of a First Party Game Developer which means that they work under a larger company that creates video game consoles.
'Ninja Theory' created multiple games consisting of a similar genre which aims to deliver a good story experience to the player rather than a heavy action .
In comparison to a company like 'Valve' who created very large game franchises like Half Life, Portal and Counter-Strike. There is a large discrepancy between both of these triple AAA developers as 'Valve's' games made a significantly larger gross revenue with these games then that of the games 'Ninja Theory' has created. For example, the game Counter-Strike has sold over 25 million copies over it's lifetime. The company 'Valve' was founded back in August of 1996 in Washington by a former 'Microsoft' employee Gabe Newell.
Game companies like 'Ninja Theory' don't have as many competitors as much more well-known game developers like 'Naughty Dog's however they still have to compete with many other mid to high tier triple AAA developers like Telltale. Telltale have released many popular titles like 'The Walking Dead' and 'The Wolf Among Us'. Telltale was founded back in early October of 2004 by Kevin Bruner and Dan Conors. However, the company recently went defunct in November of 2018 due to bankruptcy.
Another competitor to 'Ninja Theory' would be 'Activision.' Activision is more geared towards the multiplayer action genre. They have released a large variety of successful game franchise's like Call of Duty and Destiny which have collectively sold over 100 million copies of there games in total. Activision is a relatively old company; founded back in October of 1979 by Larry Kaplan.
Additionally, there is a free to play mobile game developer that is a competitor with 'Ninja Theory' called 'Gameloft.' They have released a very wide range of genres within there game developments to catch the current genre trends. The games they have released consist of Asphalt, Modern Combat and Gangster Vegas which all in total have been downloaded over 20 million times in total. The company was founded back in December of 1999 in France by Stéphane Roussel.
